THE FREEDOM TO FEEL, TO LOVE, TO THINK, TO TRAVEL, TO BECOME — THAT’S WHERE LIFE GETS GOOD.
Imagine being called darkness every day because your skin is the color of the night sky. 13 years old, teased and lonely, because no-one sees you as you see yourself. 13 years old wanting to see beautiful things, silky things, luxurious things and having no language for this, just a sense, an inner knowing that the world can be different.
Imagine growing up and deciding to design something that would leave that 13 year old in awe. A sanctuary for goddess women with skin as dark as velvet. A reprieve for luminescent femmes with freckles on honey-colored cheeks. An oasis for sumptuous ladies with hair that poofs, that kinks, that locs, that naps, that sings.
Imagine trying to birth this place of beauty during a pandemic. Pitching investors who say black women don't have money, the market is too small, the focus too niche, Covid too real.
LUXURY ISN’T WHAT WE DO, IT’S WHO WE ARE.
Imagine creating anyway… all the while dreaming of velvet skin, honied freckles, sumptuous naps.
Imagine realizing we don’t have to dream anymore.
Imagine Obánj.
